Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is it going to cost?

Good question. It depends. Each project is unique and many conditions affect the price.  Detailed sets of plans are essential to develop a final bid price. Without drawings for us to quantify, we can only imagine what it would cost – a rough estimate. Because cost is based on materials and labor we would have a hard time guessing what it would cost without a project plan.  However, upon completion of a set of plans we can quote a firm flat fee price for the job.

Can’t you just give me a quick estimate if I don’t have a project plan?

In order for us to do it right the first time and not waste your time with giving you an unrealistic number, you must give careful consideration to a project plan.  A project plan is concrete and tangible which enables you to say you are ready to move forward and then we will have a clear picture of what has to be done. We can then quantify your plan with a bid.  Once you have a bid, all decisions flow smoothly from your plan.

I have multiple projects that I would like to do at some time or another to my home.  Shall I do them simultaneously?

Sometimes, homeowners will consider doing another project while we are there, because it saves time and money down the road, but it would extend the final schedule and add to the cost.  However, some projects should be done together because one affects the other and the quality of each project depends on doing it together, hence the cost effective factor is achieved at doing it simultaneously.  To make a decision to complete multiple projects, write down what you need to have done and what you would like to have done or what can wait, so you can prioritize, narrow down your project plan and make a decision whether its cost effective, and not to stressful to your lifestyle. You should consult with Richard to give you a realistic idea of how it will affect your projects and you.

How long is it going to take?

After we do the bid we’ll have a firm schedule. Our schedule is listed and included in detail for you upon execution of the contract.

How do I make a decision to get started on a project plan?

First we will ascertain how big or small the project is.  Then depending on our schedule we can offer to draw the plan for you or recommend you to one of our trusted and experienced architects. After the project plan has been completed to your satisfaction Fitts Construction will walk you through the process.

Do I need a permit?

As a general rule, a building permit is required whenever structural work is involved or when the basic living area of a home is to be changed. For example, if you have a home with an unfinished basement, and would like to finish off a portion of it for a family room, you would need a building permit in most jurisdictions because you have changed the basic amount of living space in your house by converting storage space to “livable” space. Fitts Construction can obtain the necessary building permits.

What if I want to do some of the work?

Fitts Construction works tight to a schedule that involves a team of subcontractors and suppliers. Our schedule saves you time and money when we can do the whole job. Fitts Construction holds itself accountable to deliver to you a quality job. Our experience and knowledge in the industry ensures a job well done. Although you may have experience yourself, we are familiar with current rules and regulations and other possible roadblocks that you may not be aware of.

What do I need to do before you get started at my home?

Before Fitts Construction can begin, such as demolition, you will need to put away and/or move your personal belongings into another location in the house or outside storage area that we will not be altering. In addition we will need an available outside parking space for our debris container to keep construction waste.

Will the other stuff in my house be affected?

Yes. Fitts Construction takes care to separate new construction activity from your personal living space in order for you to maintain as best as possible a normal lifestyle. We complete the next phase of the project before we leave for the day if your home will in any way be affected or exposed by the elements. Dust is always an issue, that’s why we are meticulous about cleaning up at the end of the day. We leave everyday with all debris picked up and contained, so you and your family are safe and your home is as clean as possible.
